Contest Guidelines:

Action/Words Poetry Contest seeks submissions that call for, enact, or reflect upon connections between poetry and praxis. Each fall, the Midway team will select a verb to serve as the “action word” and theme for that year’s contest. This year, we have selected the verb “to split.” We welcome writers to submit poems that respond directly or indirectly to the various meanings of this term.

Paste the title of your submission and your bio and contact information (name, mailing address, email address, etc.) in the appropriate box. Your name and contact information must not appear anywhere on the manuscript you upload.

Previously published work will not be accepted. Simultaneous submissions are permitted but must be withdrawn from the contest if accepted elsewhere.

Poetry: up to 3 poems per entry. Any style. No word limits. No more than one poem per page.

All submissions will be considered for publication.

You may submit an unlimited number of entries, but a new entry fee must be paid for each new submission.

We are offering a new Tip Jar/Expedited reading service to our contributors. For a nominal fee ($2.50), we will guarantee a careful, expedited reading of your work. The works of authors who opt to use the expedited submissions link will be attended to first. All funds from submissions will go toward meeting the rising costs of operating and maintaining the journal. Thank you in advance for your support.

- Please send 3-5 poems / no more than 10 pages in a single document.
- No previously published work.
- Simultaneous submissions are welcome, if you notify us immediately if poems are accepted elsewhere.  Poetry has a fairly fast turnaround, so please be respectful of this request.  If you need to withdraw a single poem from a group, please add a note via the Submittable system, rather than send an email, as these can get lost in the shuffle.
  - Please submit no more than once per reading period, unless invited to do so otherwise.
  - We appreciate a cover letter that includes a brief bio.

Midway offers a variety of editing services on works not submitted for publication consideration via Submittable. Editing service inquiries can be sent to editors@midwayjournal.com, subject line Editing Services Inquiry. Editing will be performed by Midway genre editors.

In the Genre box below, please indicate the genre of your submission. In the Comments box, please feel free to leave a note about anything specific you would like us to focus on as we spend time with your work. We will edit the poems/prose electronically using track changes. We will return the work to you via Submittable. Please allow up to two weeks turnaround time before making any inquiries on the status of your submission.

For poetry, we will consider everything from word and line edits, to theme, form, and style development. For prose, we will consider everything from word choice and sentence structure to character and conflict development to overall narrative structure and form. If the work submitted is linked in a particular way (e.g. a sonnet cycle), please let us know, and we will regard the submission with this formal consideration in mind.

All fees include a one-on-one consultation regarding your work.
